The Paradise That Is Gili Air

The Paradise That Is Gili Air

Among the group of three Gili Islands located off the coast of Lombok in Indonesia, Gili Air, often personified as ‘water island’, is a scenic white-sand island surrounded by crystal clear turquoise water, and mesmerising underwater marine life. In short, this island is an alluring place to add to your Bali Route, offering the perfect travelling experience with its synergy of coastal beauty. Additionally, whether you’re travelling solo or with company, this island is just laid back enough but is also social enough to be perfect either way. Keep reading for my tips on what to do in Gili Air Island.

What to Enjoy on Gili Air

Undoubtedly a photographer’s paradise with its beautiful landscapes, Gili Air offers an eco-friendly and rather peaceful mode of transportation within the vicinity, with no motorised vehicles to dull the senses. Yes, travellers here can enjoy a retro mode of transport by availing the horse-cart {Cidomo} ride, with the other initiative for local transportation being the bicycle or electric bike.

In a nutshell, this place is close to heaven for city dwellers looking for a relaxing getaway, and in my opinion, is a must add on to your Bali experience.

Now, the perfect idea of spending a day in Indonesia may perhaps be getting out of your bed and heading straight to the beach, hoping to laze around and sip on coconut water while you have the time of your life! I’m not saying that you cannot do that on Gili Air. In fact, you can! However, Gili Air provides you with a myriad of options that you may not just know about yet. So, here you go:

  1. You up for a Hike?

Vikram and I walked around the island for two hours to admire and capture the enthralling beauty of its natural features. Our little expedition’s most fun moments included posing to take selfies on the iconic beach swings, dipping our toes into the ocean while strolling along the shore, as well as stopping at one of the many beachfront eateries for a cool beverage and a spot of people watching.

Although, if you want to familiarise yourself with the real Gili Air and the lifestyle of the local people, walk inland where you will be rewarded with free-roaming cattle in an area fringed with palm trees. If you are not up for a hike, however, you can hire bicycles. Although do note, that there are very sandy areas on many parts of the island where riding a bike can get extremely hard.

Important to remember: Keeping in mind the Muslim culture prevalent on the isle, it falls on our shoulders to be deferential and cover our bodies when far from the beach.

  1. Steal a bicycle! {Just kidding, rent one!}

An unforgettable bicycle ride is what you get when visiting this precious island, as Vikram and I discovered. You can rent a bike here for as low as 50,000 IDR per day {about INR 300}, and watch the most amazing scenery unfold while you explore the natural labyrinth that the island offers. We had a really fun and adventurous tour biking through the centre of the island to see a bit of the local life, and taste the local delicacies.

To note: Renting a bicycle is not an arduous task here, as you may get one at your hotel itself or near the dock. The thing to look out for is the west side of Gili Air, which is mostly sandy. Therefore, if you plan on heading that side, I recommend you get a bike having heavy tires. And using a headlamp in the evenings would help since the lion’s share of bikes don’t possess one.

A Complete Guide to Gili Air

  1. Take Your Pick ~ Yoga, Sup Yoga, or Aqua Yoga

Notwithstanding your experience in yoga, the island also has facilities that provide a diversity of yoga classes. Get up and get ready already!

Well ~ what do I consider the most refreshing way to begin my day? Celebrating the sunrise with a Morning Flow Class at the Blue Marine; allowing my energy to effortlessly flow through my body as I calmly gaze at the beach. But that is not all; their offerings are far more diverse than that. At sunrise and sunset you can also try stand-up paddleboard (SUP) Yoga where the waves will challenge your core balance ~ the Blue Marine dominating the beach from a distance and your doubts will be resolved.

What is even more impressive is H2O {a yoga and meditation centre located in the heart of the island} that conducts yoga classes twice daily, with workshops and yoga retreats. Or, if you favour Aqua Yoga, then get ready in your swimwear at 10:40 AM daily.

Oh, and did I mention? You can actually warm up and meditate, with a breathtaking view of the blue ocean; the serene sounds of the waves hitting the beach at intervals, an absolute bliss! That, my friend, is Mandala Blue Yoga. Another must-try.

  1. Take an Indonesian Cooking Class

Ever fancy cooking a Mie Goreng at home? Gili Cooking classes help you hone your chef skills. It certainly helped us bring the vibrant Indonesian delicacies out of our kitchen and onto the tables of our loved ones.

Indonesian cuisine is an exotic blend of flavour, colour, and aroma. Vikram and I learned the nuances of traditional Indonesian ingredients used to prepare the dishes, and how it is served to amaze!

Lined up are three daily classes, usually conducted before lunchtime, that cater to your budget. Each course is focused to make you discover your culinary passion. And, the best part? You get to sample the delicacies {your creation} at the end! Located in the harbour, be sure to check for Warung Sunny, where all the magic happens.

  1. You May Have Gone Snorkelling Before, But Not Like This.

Gili Air is the best place for snorkelling and diving, with its clear aqua water and an absolutely breath-taking reef. But the most attractive feature about this snorkelling experience, are the turtles. Sea turtles inhabit the northern part of Gili island, hence there is a high chance of spotting them there.

I would advise you to rent a private boat to get there. Additionally, snorkel carefully, don’t stand on the coral, and DO NOT attempt to feed the marine life ~ what we eat is not a natural part of their diet.

  1. Fancy Viewing Underwater Sculptures?

Prepared to be mesmerised by the underwater world of Gili Islands! For a moment, I need you to imagine. Imagine how cool would it be to witness close to 50 full-sized human figures, that too, in an arranged circle beneath the surface {I am referring to ‘Nest’, an undertaking by famous underwater sculptor and photographer Jason DeCaires Taylor}. Imagine witnessing a place that fish term as home and imagine diving there. Now, stop imagining, put on your goggles and take a dive! In my experience, this was the most fun activity we came across.

To note: 15 minutes by boat, Gili Meno may be just the place that you would go to for the same. For the best experience, early morning would be a fine time. Don’t worry about snorkelling gear, you would find rental shops in abundance. Another nice idea could be the Gili islands tour, where you can be sure to visit the best snorkelling spots.

  1. Relax and Rejuvenate

Why not pamper yourself in paradise?

Wouldn’t it be nice to feel as if your body is as light as air and you are floating in heaven? Luckily, Gili Air provides you with the best massage centres for comfort and complete relaxation. You would be happy to know that there are a multitude of choices available ~ a pedicure, manicure, facial, reflexology, nature bath, or body massage. Gili Air has it all!

My opinions now kicking in, I would recommend to you Jasmine, Bulan Madu, and Bel Air. And if your pocket allows it, Slow Villas would be the place to go.

  1. Indulge in some Retail Therapy

You can find many shopping points on Gili Air, ranging from small boutique stores with handcrafted garments for men and women, to local beachfront stalls that are popular for beautiful wood or coconut shell craft-work, and even locally produced jewellery which can make the best gifts for your loved ones.

The fun doesn’t end here; just jump over to Gili Trawangan for more. Make sure to take a ride on one of the hourly fast boats. You can easily be on time for the sunset drinks at Gili Air.

  1. Western Side Gets You the Sunsets You Dream About

Some things are enjoyable even if you repeat them umpteen numbers of times. Watching the sun set behind Bali’s Mount Agung is a sight to behold. Sipping a cocktail or having a glass of chilled beer adds to the precious experience of watching the sky change colours and transition from a pink hue to an orange and then a deep shade of red. Vikram and I enjoyed our evenings on Gili Air observing the sunset on the west side.

The junction of Sunset Blvd and Jalan Pelangi Sunset View is an ideal spot and can be reached by cycle. The iconic sunset swing in Gili T became popular, and such swings and hammocks can be seen at many bars on Gili Air. Let your ears be your guide; make a stop where there’s good music and enjoy your time!

To note: Although it depends on the tide, it is possible that you may see a cluster of tide pools. If you choose to walk, be careful as sea urchins are usually present.

Movies on the Beach: One in each direction, Bel Air and Ombak Paradise on the east coast and the south-west coast respectively are outdoor cinemas. Take a stroll and grab a movie if you are free, maybe?

  1. Join a Beach Cleanup

A paradise is no longer one if it looks like a shadow of itself, is it? It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our environment, our paradise, is maintained so. Fortunately, amazing companies like TrashHero and Gili Shark Conservation are working hard with most of the dive centres around the island by mobilising people for clean-ups weekly. Therefore, feel free to take action and join one that’s near your location.

Clean-ups don’t really take a lot of your time. With just an hour or two of work in the morning and afternoon, you also get the opportunity to meet new people and enjoy a complimentary bottle of soft drink or beer provided for the volunteers. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s join hands together and make it happen!

How to Get to Gili Air

Now, it wouldn’t be prudent of me if I go on to tell you about these adventures and don’t show you the way. Therefore, from:

From Lombok: Depending on the conditions fit for travelling, boats are accessible from early morning until late in the afternoon in the form of public and private transfers. Head to the major ports of Bangsal Harbor, Teluk Kode, Teluk Nara, or Senggigi and purchase a ticket from the offices at the beachfront. The cost of the journey should be written on the wall itself, but be wary of the scams that you may encounter, and steer clear of people touting tickets outside the country.

To note: If someone tells you luggage carrying is without cost, they must be either kidding or scamming you. Probably the latter, but anyway, if you do need assistance carrying luggage ~ negotiate.

From Bali: While you have multiple points of departure, the most sought for is a boat ride from the Padang Bai port, which is almost an hour and a half from the prominent Kuta. Spending the night in Kuta or Padang and leaving the morning after would seem like a smart option as the fast boats exit between 9 AM and 9:30 AM, and get you to Gili Air in about 2 hours. Public boats are available at much cheaper rates but I would discourage you from boarding them due to experience and safety concerns.

Other options to leave include Seragan Harbor in the southwest which extends transfers daily, Sanur in the southern region, and Amed, situated in northern Bali. Lombok is a guaranteed stop for all speed boats though.

Tips for a Comfortable Stay

Withdrawing money: Make sure you have enough cash to enjoy your trip and then some more for emergencies. While there are two ATMs on Gili Air, you might find them out of currency for the number of travellers is enormous. Additionally, there are frequent power outages, so do not let that spoil your vacation. Keep your pockets full when you arrive.

Electricity and Internet availability: As a traveller, you should focus on enjoying your day. The infrastructure in Gili Air supports on that front. Expect multiple power outages and make up your mind to enjoy the natural light because that is all you get during power cuts that may last several hours. On that note, I would advise you to ensure you’re finished with your business before your holiday. Because your holiday should be the perfect opportunity to get free from the cages of technology and enjoy being in the lap of nature.

Excursion to see the dragons: Komodo and Lombok are two places of interest around Gili Air. If you’re interested in seeing Komodo dragons in real life, hire a boat for multiple days, and head over to Komodo.

Right across Gili lies Lombok. Take this as an excursion on a dedicated day trip, else stop by on your way to Bali.

Here Are Some Great Places to Stay

Gili Air has ample options with different choices of budget and type of stay. Your personality, lifestyle, and budget should determine your choice because every type of visit has its vibe and atmosphere.

You may choose villas, beachfront properties, bungalows, homestays, or hostels. If you’re looking for energy, prefer proximity to the harbour. Once you start moving inwards, there are inconspicuous and silent bungalows with an eerie serenity. Further west, it’s a laid-back atmosphere with people enjoying the sunset.

These are my picks:

Pink Coco: The Coco’s a top-rated place with a night costing around the $100 mark {INR 7000}. Travellers should know that they stand true to their name. Bikes, décor, and even the bean bags on the beach are, you guessed it right, Pink! You get a large size pool, and the Coco is a great place to enjoy the sunset. Your love for the colour would, perhaps, supersede your budget!

Senang Villa: Tranquillity is the word that describes the Senang Villa. Relax on the patio by the pool. Day or night, regardless, the rooms are quiet, and you get fresh water from the water faucet. The sound of the waves on the shore is lovely and inviting. You’ll be drawn to the sea that’s only a couple of minutes from the villa.

Manta Dive Gili Air Resort: This resort accommodates students from the Manta Dive, which is a diving school. However, travellers rejoice, you may rent this accommodation. Located very close to the shore, the beach is within walking distance. Those who like calmer and cleaner waters are free to use the swimming pool.

This resort is ideal for solo travellers who want to spend time at the beach, eat out, meet new people, and connect with other guests and the locals.

Cultural Awareness ~ How to Blend in Smoothly

  • On foreign visits, one must pay due respect to the local culture. The Gili Islands are a Muslim majority, and Islamic culture requires the body to be covered up.
  • There are no hard rules, and the beach is as relaxed as you would expect. However, do not expect freedom like European beaches. Topless sunbathing is restricted. A bikini is undoubtedly sexy attire for a beach, but you might invite uncomfortable glances if you walk into a store or past a mosque wearing one.
  • You should take off your footwear when you enter personal premises like a house or a shop.
  • Awareness of the local dialect always helps. I’m not asking you to memorise 100 words. Even if you speak a few words, you get to see a smile on the faces of the locals listening to you. “Selamat Pagi” is good morning. “Thanks” is another magical word and “Terima Kasih” is how you convey the heartfelt. “Apa Kabar” is someone asking how you are doing. To this, your response should be “bagus,” which means good.

To conclude: Blue skies, serene beaches, turquoise waters, and incredible peace and quiet ~ if this sounds heavenly, Gili Air is the ideal destination for you!

    • I always pick up trash before leaving the beach… It’s crazy how little some people care about taking care of the earth.

  • Wow ~ what an incredible place! This is where I would like to be floating in a tropical sea, camera in hand, taking underwater photos!
