Oscars 2017: The Best Fashion Looks from the Red Carpet
Best Dressed Celebrities on the Red Carpet
The 89th annual Academy Awards red carpet had everything from the flamboyant shimmer of metallics to the eloquent softness of velvets gracing the night where movie stars shone as brightly as those up in the sky! The evening had more winners than those who walked up to the stage to claim their golden statue. The winning charm of smiles, gorgeous gowns, and stunning jewellery had me swooning on the lustrous avatars of some of our favourite celebs.
Given the political state America is in at this time; the patriotic colours of red, white, and blue seemed to have beautifully conquered the Oscars red carpet this year. Viola Davis and Ruth Negga looked chic in Red, this Fashion Month’s most fiery trend; while Felicity Jones and Naomi Harris chose to break stereotypes about white being too bridal for the red carpet. Then there was the beautiful sprinkling of blue that came in the form of the ACLU ribbons which dotted the lapels of some of the attendees.
A refreshing fashion trend that stood out was the vintage vibes via retro-inspired looks by some of the stars. The inspiration may have its roots in this year’s most popular movie, La La Land. Emma Stone ruled the night in a lovely 20’s-inspired Givenchy ensemble, Kirsten Dunst made heads turn in a glamorous ‘50s-style Dior gown, and Brie Larson looked stunning in a custom Oscar de la Renta which brought the lovely vintage ruffles back in business.
The evening wasn’t just about dazzling gowns; accessories added glitz to one of Hollywood’s biggest nights. Headbands made their way from the fashion runways to the red carpet. Ruth Negga and Janelle Monáe wore elegant headbands that added to the charm of their look, while Harris’ bold look was completed with mismatched shoes. I also spotted some stunning necklaces on Taraji P. Henson and Jessica Biel. While I am still talking about accessories, Jackie Chan’s stuffed pandas {!} are certainly worth a mention.

Olivia Culpo
In Custom Marchesa
Why: This water-themed ensemble had more than just a striking look; the custom Marchesa worn by Olivia Culpo was about walking down the red carpet adorned in a flapper-esque gown for a cause. The former Miss USA supported the cause of funding clean water for people in developing countries around the world. There is no doubt that I loved the fashion-statement made by this fringe-clad silver siren, and there is no doubt that more people than those whose interest lies solely in the entertainment business will be applauding this look. Olivia paired the gown with Neil Lane jewels and a clutch by the label.
Darby Stanchfield
In Georges Chakra
Why: Simple yet stunning, Stanchfield’s ethereal white gown had some unique detailing. The beautiful textured bottom with eyelet-inspired detailing augmented her stunning looks, and the metallic Rubeus Milano python box clutch and pearl & turquoise statement earrings from Neil Diamonds playfully amplified her over-all look.
Karlie Kloss
In Stella McCartney
Why: Kloss looked breathtaking at this year’s Oscars. While she had a very simplistic overall look, there were so many aspects to her gown and accessories that made her look unstuffy and modern compared to much of the red-carpet crowd. From the floor-length white gown to the asymmetrical cape; from the beautifully detailed floral choker by Nirav Modi to the Roger Vivier clutch; Kloss’s modish look was a total winner for the evening.
Viola Davis
In Custom red Armani Privé
Why: Viola was certainly channelling glamour when she attended the 2017 Oscars in a custom silk, red Armani creation with a high neckline and draped shoulders with pleated detailing on the bodice that gave way to a beautiful cascading train. In my opinion, Viola blazed her way onto the best-dressed list with a powerful pop of colour. She paired her look with a chrome silver clutch and a delightful new pixie hairdo.
Emma Stone
In Givenchy Haute Couture
Why: Recreating the bedazzled look of the elusive award, Emma looked stunning in gold. Her embroidered, fringed gown from Ricardo Tisci’s final couture collection for Givenchy harks back to old Hollywood glamour. Her look was completed with a spectacular pair of diamond drop earrings from Tiffany & Co.
Priyanka Chopra
In Ralph & Russo
Why: The sheer force of Priyanka’s second appearance at the Oscars, in an ivory white Ralph and Russo column dress which accentuated her curves to perfection, was enough to give me energy and inspiration! She looked stunning in this creation with its structured and bold bodice with a deep-split corset. There was nothing fussy about her sleek hairdo, her luscious nude lips, or the 60 carats Lorraine Schwarts diamonds.
Taraji P. Henson
In Custom Alberta Ferretti
Why: Henson looked beautifully elegant in her custom velvet Ferretti. The sultry diva was pure perfection in the midnight blue off-shoulder gown with a plunging neckline and thigh-high slit. Her look received a winning gleam from the enviable diamond necklace designed by Nirav Modi. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend indeed!
To conclude: Every year the Oscars usher in a real show of beauty, talent, and trends. With creations from the most renowned fashion houses and accessories that are the envy of every woman, the Oscar red carpet is a brilliant display of Hollywood glamour. This year was as remarkable as each year’s display; it put together some of the most desirable gowns and accessories in one place, and I can only hope for an equally fabulous red carpet next year!
