Met Gala 2016 Red Carpet Best Dresses and Evening Gowns
Possibly fashion’s most-watched night of the year, the 2016 MET Gala red carpet did not disappoint. Themed ‘The Manus X Machina-Fashion in an Age of Technology’ at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC; from minimal monochrome to ultramodern metallic, the looks that caught my eye shared one customary thread: certifiable amounts of glamour! Here are the Met Gala 2016 red carpet best dresses and evening gowns that made my list:
Jourdan Dunn in Balmain
The supermodel bedazzled in a semi-sheer beaded suit of armour, courtesy of Olivier Rousteing and Balmain. The glittery silver evening gown with thousands of intricate rhinestones showcased sheer side cut-outs that drew attention to her slim waist and was perfectly in tune with the gala’s theme. Complementing her ensemble, Jourdan rocked a sleek bob that had been coloured a harmonising shade of silvery pewter.
Poppy Delevingne in Marchesa
Poppy’s bejewelled silver fringe Marchesa dress hit the ‘fashion meets technology’ mark. She vamped up her look with red lips & a dark manicure and accessorised with sandals from Giuseppe Zanotti and a silver clutch.
Zendaya in Michael Kors
Zendaya and Michael Kors are a match made in heaven! The red carpet chameleon oozed Hollywood glamour in a custom sequined gold Michael Kors evening gown while rocking a retro bowl-cut wig that drew just the right amount of attention to her sultry bronzed eyes. She completed her look with Jorge Adeler rings.
Beyoncé in Givenchy
Met Gala 2016 Red Carpet “moment”: Bey’s futuristic floor-length Givenchy gown crafted from crystal and pearl-adorned nude latex was a head-turner thanks to her latest stylist Marni Senofonte. Beauty wise, she went with poker straight tresses and smoky eyes to offset her nude pink lips.
Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton
Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander walked the red carpet with Nicolas Ghesquieré, Louis Vuitton’s creative director, rocking a short mixed media LV dress with sleek metallic sparkles and an asymmetrical hem; exhibiting those perfect legs in bold LV footwear, and finishing off her look with Bulgari jewels.
Kylie Jenner in Balmain
Kylie marked her red carpet debut dripping in Lorraine Schwartz jewels, wearing a custom embellished-silver Balmain evening gown featuring sheer side panels and allowing for some skin-show in a sultry way. Her edgy sense of style worked so well with the theme of the exhibit, as did her sleek dark bob.
Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace
Kate stunned in a custom Atelier Versace strapless white gown with cut-out sheer panels, studded leather layers, and a centre split tulle hem. I really love her look; it touches on the theme of the evening with a sultry appeal. Kate accessorised with statement rings, and peep-toe metallic platform pumps from Giuseppe Zanotti.
Claire Danes in Zac Posen
Claire Danes’ gorgeous baby blue Zac Poesen illuminating ball gown was lined with glow-in-the-dark fibre optics throughout, highlighting the intricate detailing from the corset to the full skirt & train. A look that easily made her one of the evening’s most memorable!
To conclude: With a technology-tied theme, the fashion elite showcased a sculptural and deconstructed take on haute couture ~ featuring a flurry of metallic, shimmering, and futuristic looks, paired with slick-backed sleek hairstyles delivering the Met Gala 2016 Red Carpet Best Dresses and Evening Gowns list.
The exhibition itself outlines the evolution of fashion from the invention of the sewing machine to the onset of mass manufacture that has warranted fast fashion enterprises like H&M and Zara to thrive.
Driven by the emergence of 3D printing, laser cutting techniques, and computer modelling, technology and fashion are moving closer than ever!
