Detox Water Recipe for a Healthier You
Being health conscious is often equated with rigorous exercise or hard-to-digest diets. But it can start as simple as drinking more water, to keep our internal system working like a well-oiled machine. As I am gearing up to make my health a priority this year, I am also going to add a bit of flavour to my water consumption with this refreshing and delicious detox water recipe.
Why Detox Water?
The word detox is only used lightly in this context, as our kidneys and livers are already working full time to flush out toxins from our body, keeping our digestive system healthy. With this delicious detox water recipe, you are improving water’s medicinal value while making it more palatable using yummy ingredients!
Lemon: Lemon water tastes great all by itself! Being a good source of vitamin C, lemon is also known for its excellent anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. Just add a slice of lemon to your water, and let the yellow fruit work its charm to improve your immunity, promote digestion, and assist in weight loss as well. A note of caution: Overuse of lemon will cause your tooth enamel to erode, so use it in moderation.
Cucumber: With antioxidants, vitamins, and plenty of nutrients, cucumber is rightly hailed as the superfood and a must-have ingredient in this delicious detox water recipe. Antioxidants help delay some types of cell damage and help reduce the risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart-related conditions. Cucumber can also be used to build muscle strength besides helping with weight loss and soothing skin irritations.
Ginger: The potential benefits of ginger are plentiful. Not only does it add flavour to this water but it packs a powerful nutritional punch and is loaded with minerals including potassium, magnesium, and copper. Besides, it is suggested that this medicinal root helps in regulating blood sugar, alleviating nausea, and facilitating weight loss while its anti-inflammatory properties detoxify the body and boost the immune system.
Mint: Mint adds that refreshing flavour to this delicious detox water recipe, while also making the water feel cooler down your throat. Additionally, it refreshes your breath, soothes an upset tummy, and keeps your skin looking fresh. It’s also a must-have herb for fighting your summer woes, i.e. the tiredness you feel during dry, hot days to acne and headaches brought on by hot weather.
To note: This delicious detox water recipe is a flavourful replacement for those of you who want to reduce the amount of ‘empty calories’ you may be consuming from fizzy and other sweetened drinks. I consume at least eight 200 ml glasses of fluid a day, but you may need more if you live in a hot climate or are more physically active.
Now that we’ve got the ingredients ready, let’s go ahead and put together this delicious detox water recipe that promises to be a treat to your taste buds!
Detox Water
Prep time: 10 min
Makes: 2 litres
Ingredients:
- 2 litres of Mineral/Distilled/Filtered Water
- 1 Lemon, sliced
- 1 Cucumber, sliced
- 1 inch of Fresh Ginger, sliced
- 4 Fresh Mint Sprigs
- A Pitcher or Bottle to store
Preparation:
This delicious detox water recipe doesn’t have to be exact, as we are not making a complicated Fish Paturi or Galouti Kebab here. 🙂 Feel free to alter it to suit your taste.
- Wash the lemon, cucumber, ginger, and mint leaves thoroughly. Then slice the lemon, cucumber, and ginger into circles. If you are tempted to peel the skin, please don’t. They bring all the health benefits with them.
- It’s time to bring out your favourite water bottle or pitcher. Have three-fourths of it filled with clean drinking water.
- Add the lemon, cucumber, ginger, and mint to the water. Stir, allowing the water to soak in the essence of all the ingredients.
- Let steep for at least 45 minutes. Or pop into the refrigerator overnight.
- Consume in the morning and/or throughout the day. Remember to add in fresh mint for garnish when you serve.
You may refill the jug when the water is used up without having to worry about losing flavour. Discard the lemon, cucumber, ginger, and mint the next day and make a fresh batch. Not only will this detox water make you feel better all around, it looks awesome sitting on the dining table too. Make sure you try it out!
