Decoding the cult of MUJI

MUJI, originally founded in Japan in 1980 ~ a humble start with 40 products ranging from stationery to kitchen appliances ~ presently offers 7000+ products including apparel, household items, and food. Their products are reasonably priced, highly competitive, top quality with no frills, and continue to have a sizeable share of the market.

Mujirushi Royhin (MUJI) in Japanese translates to “no-brand quality goods.”

The foundation of MUJI is based on its core values and three guiding principles:

  1. Material selection
  2. Streamlined processes
  3. Simplified packaging

The speciality of MUJI’s products is that they follow an extremely powerful yet very rational manufacturing process, which is that they are very simple, yet stylish in their own way. They believe in high connection with their users and embracing universality, and this has helped build ‘The Cult of Muji’.

Muji is well known for its design excellence which follows a minimalism approach emphasising reusability, durability, and efficiency in production and packing; which is backed by a unique first of its kind ‘no-logo’ and ‘no-brand’ policy.

The Japanese retail giant will open its first store at Palladium, Mumbai in August, and follow it up with a second outpost in Bangalore’s VR Bengaluru in September.

Colours of the Earth

What would Earth be like without humans? You may be surprised to know that there exists such a place on our planet, which is untouched, pristine, and is a perfect example of nature at its best when there is no external interference.

Indonesia has over 13000+ islands, and one of them is Raja Ampat Islands, which is very near to New Guinea. Here the Indian Ocean meets the Pacific Ocean, and as a result, the islands that are shaped like clusters of mushrooms have the most biodiverse marine ecosystem in the world! The islands are untouched by humans and have nature thriving at its best; if you get a chance to dive in, you will witness breath-taking corals, extending for miles together. MUJI has brought this to life through their photographs. MUJI Colours of the Earth represents nature at its best by reproducing the colours of Earth woven through the struggle for survival.

  • Your way of writing is so captivating! I swear I always have to read your full post then I go back and look at your photos! 🙂

  • Be still my heart! This Japanese homeware and lifestyle brand, Mujirushi Ryohin – typically shortened to Muji – is an absolute favourite! I’m thrilled to welcome them to my city!

On a side note: So tired of all those instagirls and bloggers who just do “guys buy this” posts. This is so much easier on the eye! ✨

  • Your posts are always so inspiring, and the photos are just absolutely gorgeous! This post has three of my favourite things all combined together: VR Bengaluru, fashion, and MUJI!

  • Stunning photos, Tanya. Love how you’re able to capture the romance of MUJI! I am a fan of their affordable, high-quality, minimalist Japanese home goods. 🙂

  • Amazing photos and I also just love the structure to your writing, Tanya.

Now coming to Muji ~ since finishing college, I’ve been focusing a lot on my illustration and the Muji pens are so easy to use to get a good line and they come in a variety of colours. I hope they will be available at the VR Muji store… 🙂

  • Inspirational! It would be great to have the brand conduct informative workshops where they can provide useful tips on how one can organise their home/personal space through MUJI’s range of storage solutions.

  • Thank you for this wonderful post, Tanya! Walking into Muji, is like entering an organizational wonderland—sleek where minimal home goods tempt you from every shelf! 🙂

  • Loved this! I’m a fiend for notebooks, and the search for the perfect one is an epic quest. Muji’s varied and affordable offerings provide respite from the world of overly precious, overly marketed paper goods. 🙂

  • Aw ~ stunning pictures! Pens and pencils are the first thing I seek out at Muji, and I always walk out with a well-stocked pencil case. 🙂 Plus, the total lack of embellishment or decoration fits into my minimal aesthetic perfectly.

  • I. Love. Muji.
My kitchen table is home to a variety of activities, including work, crafting, and nightly dinners. The texture and colour variation of Muji’s place mats make them feel appropriate for any occasion, and their durable cotton construction means they’ll only get softer over time. 🙂

  • Hands down one of my favourite stores for absolutely anything! Although, I am partial to the acrylic storage containers I use for some of my makeup! I am so happy that they’ve opened up a retail location in Bengaluru!

  • I fell in love with Muji as soon as I discovered the brand on my trip to Singapore. I’m a huge sucker for their aroma diffuser. It’s a natural way to make your room smell good with essential oils! 🙂

  • MUUUUUUJI!! So simple. So minimalist. I absolutely love the organic cotton offerings they have for clothing. Everything from its design to brand aesthetic resonates with me. Thank you for sharing.
