This year the theme of JD’s Annual Design Awards ~ ‘Untold Stories’ ~ had been conceptualised and crafted to commemorate the initiative ~ ‘Make in India’ ~ coined by the Government of India, known for its outreach to the various sectors. The Gen-next designers had been vested with the responsibility of narrating the ‘Untold Stories’ of India’s very own artisans, weavers, and craftsmen who haven’t attained recognition for their art. The idea was to celebrate discovery, exploration, revival, and retention of the rich heritage of our textile and clothing history.

During this prestigious Fashion Awards Extravaganza, the institute acknowledged the extraordinary design excellence and untapped skills of the graduating students. The students seemed to have not just exerted rigorous efforts in locating the various artisans, weavers, and craftsmen but also in collaborating with them, to create a unique line of ‘Ready to wear’ collection, that will no doubt capture the essence of traditional yet modern India. The show witnessed 42 collections with more than 300 garments from gen-next designers.

The jury comprised of experts from the fashion fraternity, lifestyle and luxury industry, who scrutinised, supervised, and evaluated the collections of these aspiring designers, and nominated winners based on their vision, interpretation, innovation, creativity, and social responsibility.

India is known for its diversity, and its richness lies in the skilled artisans who are an integral identity of the country. The project aimed to acknowledge and honour India’s numerous skilled craftsmen, artisans & weavers and bring them to the limelight they deserve so that their art form doesn’t perish due to lack of adequate financial and administrative support. The event generated a platform for the craftsmen and artisans to display their work, ensuring a mutually favourable relationship with the designers, instrumental in retaining the art form and appreciating the artist.
