How To Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Versatile Packing at its Finest

It goes without saying that travelling is infectious! I have always been fascinated not only about visiting new places but also with the planning that happens before the journey begins, especially when it comes to deciding on what clothes I need to take with me.

Yes, for me, the holiday mood sets in once I start packing ~ even before I get to the airport and board my flight. Before every trip, I lay out my outfits and try everything on, and finally pack what would best suit that particular place/country I am travelling to. The very task of revamping my list excites me and gives me a ‘high’. That being said, I am always organised and thoughtful, and leave room to bring home ‘new found’ treasures.

But we don’t all travel the same way. I know that each of you has their own way of organising, planning and packing before a trip. Because we do not choose the same places to travel to, nor the same season to travel during. While I am really curious to know how you manage your packing lists, I would like to share my tips on how to build a travel capsule wardrobe, and what I usually do while planning my travel wardrobe. Read on…

How To Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe: The questions you need to ask to yourself while building a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Whether you call it a travel capsule wardrobe or a basic travel wardrobe, the idea is to identify between what you ‘need’ and what you ‘must have’ while travelling. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to building your travel capsule wardrobe, however keep in mind that a capsule wardrobe is designed to make your life easier when travelling.

Pack clothes with a few mix and match combination of pieces that will help create the feeling of wearing numerous outfits during your trip. Think simple, versatile, and convenient as you get started ~ like dresses, skirts, jeans, and t-shirts ~ and add on to the versatility depending on the place/country you are visiting. If you are planning on creating a brand new wardrobe for a particular trip, then first decide on a budget, buy accordingly, and make the additions to it slowly and with purpose. You can additionally pick up a few key pieces purchased with intention from the markets where you are.

But if you’re still wondering what it is all about, these eight questions will guide you in creating your own personal Travel Capsule Wardrobe.

  • Do the outfits work for the various places you intend to visit?
The main reason I recommend having a travel capsule wardrobe, is to maximise “wearability” by choosing clothes that are comfortable, versatile and easy to maintain while travelling. Once your sightseeing schedule is decided, ensure you can adapt your choice depending on where you will be visiting ~ beach, village, temple, trek, or city travel.
  • What type of travel is it going to be?
I reiterate, plan your wardrobe according to the place you are going to visit. If it’s a warm destination or if your trip is scheduled during summer, then choose your wardrobe to go with the weather there. If you intend to spend most of your time in cities, then you might prefer to have pieces that reflect the urban vibe. Also, keep in mind the kind of activities you might indulge in during your stay there.
  • Am I planning to engage in their most popular activities?
What is it that you would like to experience during you travels? Do you prefer adventure sports, or would you like to stick to sight-seeing places of interest, or is the beach more your scene? Does hiking and trekking interest you, or would like to spend your time skiing? Sure, we each might like to experience something new while travelling, and the choices vary depending on the person, but remember ~ your luggage should have clothes that takes into account your recreational passions as well.

  • What are the weather conditions like when I travel to my destination?
Check the climate of the place before packing because what works perfectly in a warmer environment will not work well if you are travelling to countries where temperatures drop to minus ~ you will definitely need extra layers to keep you warm there. Plan for that and tweak accordingly.
  • Find out what the local culture is like.
It is important to respect the local culture and dress appropriately so that people there are not offended in any way. I would suggest packing clothes which cover your arms, shoulders and knees especially in countries that have dress codes and strict rules when it comes to places of religious observance.
  • How often will I be able to do my laundry when travelling for more than a week?
Irrespective of the number of days you are travelling for, I would suggest packing for not more than a week. What is most important is that once you reach your destination, find out how you could go about doing your laundry. Consider the climate, your type of travel, the activities you are planning, and know that the entire world washes their clothes ~ somehow you can make it work too.

  • How to pack light and be a smart traveller?
You may not be able to carry all that you ‘want’ but you have to be smart and decide upon the clothes that you ‘need’. This is also where fabrics and bag size comes in. The lighter you travel, the more you will enjoy the journey without your back and wallet complaining. Thus ~
  1. Follow a minimalist approach.
  2. Build your wardrobe based on classic styles which are trendy.
  3. Give a thought to layering your outfits so that you can build on them.
  4. Pack mix and match combinations and you’ll automatically pack less. And yes, wrinkle-free clothes make a great choice too.
  5. And lastly, be ruthless in the packing mode ~ choose a smaller bag.
  • Which outfits make me comfortable while travelling {and when at home}?
What is it that you wear most often that can work? Your look should not drastically differ from what you regularly wear, and what makes you feel comfortable ~ as these are things you will be in all day long for however long you’re exploring. Remember, a travel capsule wardrobe should work for many occasions, make your days relaxing, and most importantly, bring a smile on your face.

  • Such a great blog post! Not going anywhere at the moment but lots of great ideas here. ✨

On another note: I love observing local street styles when I travel. Beyond a visual expression of style, I believe fashion can also reflect a deeper sense of the culture as well if thought about in a larger context of history, religion, place, etc. That’s the anthropologist in me geeking out I guess. 🙂

  • Love this! ❤️ When we travel for JOY, a carry on is the only way to go!! One of the many reasons, I love to pack my cabi… it mixes and matches, it’s easy to dress up and down, and it rolls perfectly into a suitcase!

  • This is incredible! I totally love what you put together here! ✨

On that note, find out what brings YOU JOY and GO THERE!! Can’t lie, I’m ready for a VACATION, somewhere warm, somewhere I can dip my toes in the water, somewhere I can get a little sun-kissed. It’s time to start making smart VACATION plans… So it’s time to pack a travel capsule!
