An Exclusive Interview with Supermodel Jackie Besterwitch

I recently caught up with globetrotting supermodel and all-round mega babe, Jackie Besterwitch on her fitness routine, beauty secrets, and personal style.

Tanya Dhar: You’re constantly working on different projects. How do you stay healthy when you’re doing so much at once? How do you take the time to fit everything into such a busy schedule?

Jackie Besterwitch: Staying healthy is honestly quite simple:

  • Know what works for you
  • Commit yourself, and
  • Follow a balanced diet

There is no excuse for not staying fit. I avoid junk food and try to pack in foods that are high in protein and high in fibre. I also exercise regularly. I ensure I get adequate sleep to enable me to function at my best capacity, and of course, to combat stress I pray and meditate. Anything is possible if you are focused, disciplined, and committed. It’s also really important to prioritise, plan and manage your time well.

Tanya Dhar: What gets you motivated to work out on days when you’re not feeling the gym? What is your biggest challenge when it comes to staying on track to a healthy lifestyle?

Jackie Besterwitch: Motivation isn’t the key here, I think discipline is. You will not find me at a gym, I prefer to workout outdoors as I find it more exhilarating. A good pair of sneakers, music, and an open road is all I need. Pumping in 6 to 7 km of running, 4 to 5 times a week covers my routine. There are days when I’m busy with work, and sometimes in no mood to exercise ~ and I don’t! But I compensate by adding an extra 20 minutes into my workout session the following day. I find it’s how you balance it out; listening to and understanding your body is important.

My biggest challenge to a healthy lifestyle… I guess everything becomes a challenge when you cross 30 years of age; it’s that much harder to look good and stay fit. But my whole approach has changed with time and age. I understand my body and myself a lot better. So now, it’s about working from within; eating smart, practising yoga, and staying fit as opposed to just looking fabulous.

Tanya Dhar: What is the biggest fitness myth you encounter in the fitness industry every day? What is the biggest aspect that you think needs to change in the modelling industry?

Jackie Besterwitch: Fitness Myth: The more you sweat the more fat you burn.

Fact: Sweating is our body’s way of cooling down and regulating our internal body temperature.
Earlier, I used to worry because I didn’t sweat much while working out. So, I consulted with a fitness instructor who educated me on the above-mentioned fact.

What needs to change in the industry? This is a tough one. Nothing really… But the general perception of people outside the industry needs to change; they need to be more respectful and start taking the fashion industry more seriously. People need to understand that this is a profession with a whole lot of dignity and potential; it isn’t as shallow and frivolous as it’s made out to be.

Tanya Dhar: What does your daily diet look like? Do you give yourself “cheat days”?

Jackie Besterwitch: Honestly, I’m not big on following a specific diet. I don’t restrict myself much, but I do keep a check on what I consume. Moderation and balance are important; burn more calories than you consume. So, I ensure I don’t overindulge, and I make it a point to train harder if I do take liberties with my diet.

Tanya Dhar: Do you have a special skincare routine? What are your favourite skincare products? And, what’s the best beauty tip you’ve picked up from a pro?

Jackie Besterwitch: For me, healthy glowing skin starts from within. I’ve been blessed with good genetics, and hence do not need to do much. But, having said that, I do stay hydrated; I eat healthy, I exercise and I try to keep stress at bay. Adequate sleep is equally important to me because this is where you regenerate and recover from your day-to-day activities. I also truly believe it all boils down to your mental makeup.

My use of beauty products is minimal, and I do prefer organic products. Soap or face wash is a big no for me, instead I find that a splash of cold water a few times during the day is a healthier option. I use a tomato mash mask on my face for 20 minutes, twice a week; which hydrates and keeps my skin fresh and supple.

Lancôme Visionnaire multi correcting cream, which I apply before sleeping, is definitely my favourite skincare product. I also like the use of Apple Cider Vinegar as a toner, as I find it balances my skin’s pH levels beautifully leaving it looking like porcelain. And the best beauty advice I’ve received is to never sleep with my makeup on.

Tanya Dhar: Your off-duty style is inspiring, how would you describe your style personally? Is there anything particular in your closet that you find yourself always reaching for?

Jackie Besterwitch: Style should be able to reflect your personality. Style for me style is inherent; it goes beyond clothes ~ it’s more of an attitude. My mood reflects my style too ~ it can go from edgy and whimsical to chic and sophisticated. But it’s my love for streetwear that defines my style best; I love easy dressing, so more often than not I see myself reaching out for a pair of jeans and a tee. 🙂

Parting advise from this supermodel and stylist, “There is no formula to anything. You have to give it a shot to see if it works for you.” Inspired?
